Question: how can entrepreneurs meet investors?

Answer: check out the new Coffee & Capital programme, recently launched by the University of Science Centre in Philadelphia.

It has long been the case that people love to chat and socialise over a cup of coffee. Some of the first coffee houses in London were nick-named ‘penny universities’ because of the discourse that took place between coffee-drinkers. This time honoured tradition has translated into coffee mornings, business meetings, social events… and now networking ones too.

The first road-test for this idea will take place on 20 July and it is hoped that it will become a monthly event. The schedule for the July meeting will be for Ms Weber of Robin Hood Ventures to liaise with some entrepreneurs in a ‘question and answer format’ meeting. The topic of conversation is to be focused on how investors make selections, plus tips on how entrepreneurs can improve their chances of success when they approach investors for funding.

In this economic climate, such pearls of wisdom are especially valuable. The programme is being sponsored by the Dolfinger-McMahon Foundation. Of course, funding is a key requirement to help fledgling entrepreneurs get off the ground and successful businesses mean increased employment opportunities and more benefits all-round.

The University has targets to help such entrepreneurs, by increasing the progressive commercialisation of technology, developing local economies and making scientific breakthroughs and discoveries into commodities that can be shared, improved and brought to the market. It is one of the largest urban research parks in America.
